AAIM (ASIAN AMERICANS IN MEDIA)
ROLE
Director of Design, Co-Founder, Visual Designer, Content Contributor, Video Editor
CONTEXT
As Director of Design at UW’s AAIM, I was tasked with creating the initial brand identity for the first two years of our student organization. We agreed as a team that AAIM should serve to be unforgiving, eclectic, and welcoming of all art and design styles, as the organization itself was founded with the purpose of uplifting creative Asian artists, photographers, videographers, musicians, designers, etc.
The original brand voice was very minimal and modern, but we instead opted for a more edgy, rough design identity to show that nontraditional styles were just as valid as what is popular in artful mediums. This proved to be a success as our first substantial project - a full scale print magazine - contained content of great variety.
I also was in charge of putting the magazine together, while providing direction to any member or artist who wanted to submit artwork. This process consisted of providing consultation and feedback, and leading workshops on creative tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere Pro. It also involved taking all of our members’ work, editing it, and putting it together into a master file to be sent to the printer.
It was my responsibility to ensure the printing process went smoothly, communicating with our printing company to ensure all printing-specific needs were met. This meant providing files with proper bleed, crop, etc., and converting artist submissions into the correct file.
